I personally don't "hate" Plant per se. I just feel very fed up with his
vacillating, contradicatory statements, and I dislike what he's doing with
his vocal stylings now. It's not about his voice maturing. He's still able
to sing in a forceful style, but he insists on this whispering, almost
wheezing style and these affections that sound, to my ears, really lame.

Plus he's growing increasingly arrogant as time goes by. He comes across
with this smarmy, "holier than thou" attitude in interviews and then tries
to ease its impact by throwing in some lame self-deprecating remarks about
his age. It's to the point where I seriously believe he walked out on Jimmy
more because he didn't want to share the spotlight than because he didn't
want to be trapped in the Zeppelin mold. Check out the interview on FTLOFBO
from the 98 tour, the one where the girl interviewer is obviously a major
Jimmy freak. Plant seems genuinely pissed that Page is getting all the
attention.

For years I was a major Plant fan, but now I just find him more annoying
than anything else. And at the end of the day, he owes his fame and fortune
to Led Zeppelin. The guy's solo career, while interesting at times, only
succeeded when he either a. Did the pop crooner thing with In the Mood and
Big Log; b. did the nostalgia novelty thing with the Honeydrippers; or c.
did the pesudo-Zeppelin thing with Now and Zen. Everything else he's done
has crashed commercially faster than the proverbial lead balloon!

Plus, I have to admit that there's a tiny bit of devilish fun in getting the
Plant freaks all wound up and indignant to the point where they write long
dissertations claiming to know exactly what Plant think and feels about
everything even if they've never met the guy or else only cornered him for
an autograph somewhere.

I know, I know, at least he's making new music and touring. Jimmy is into
his kids these days according to what he says. I hope he'll make some new
music soon, but at least he seems much more humble and real in interviews.

Just an observation.
How does one proclaim themselves a major fan of Led
Zeppelin while hating one of the 2 frontmen, one of
the icons of the band, one of the guys everybody
thinks of when Zep is mentioned(uninformed casual
listeners, people who HATE Zep, etc etc)????
Cause let me tell you, I'd say that all us Plant
lovers, are also VERY fond of Jimmy, not to mention
Bonzo & JPJ.
So, how does that work?
