There are some shows that you have in your collection that are so bad in SQ you
would think anything new to come along is gonna be a great upgrade. Sometimes
you're right and score a good find, and sometimes you're left with more
questions than answers. That's how I feel about Beezlebub's latest "In the
Garden of Sweden." Happy to have gotten a definate upgrade to what I had but
still left wondering about some things.
Considering that the only sources of this I had was the FBO tree "1969
Scandanavian tour The Audience recording" and a partial tape of questionable
gen/origin, Beezlebub's master pre fm broadcast and the fm broadcast master are
indeed a very welcome upgrade. Nice clean and balanced and certainly not as
"muddy" as my tape was. The incomplete pre fm has been around its circles based
on reviews found at the usual places. I was hoping this realease would contain
the whole show but alas it's not. Still missing tkar, and WS/BMS and HMMT is
faded out after about 2 minutes. The FM broadcast is essentially a repeat of
the first part of disc 1 but with the DJ ( have no idea what tongue!)
commentary. If you only have the old FBO tree, again disc 1 is good to have but
I honestly cannot comment on the difference between this and the other versions
of the board tape that are out there. ( Missing Links, Kicks )
Now , being as the FBO set was from a 1st gen I was hoping for at least some
improvement from the audience master, but could barely tell if there was any
difference. I guess even the master of a real piss poor aud recording is gonna
still be real poor. Included for the completist I guess but kinda overkill and
this could've been released as just 1 disc with the new pre-fm master. It is a
pretty rough listen. Even though they are still cdrs the discs I recieved were
flawless and the foldover cover and disc art are also high up there in the
quality quotient. Interesting use of stills from Zep's earliest promo vids.
Jimmy with a face full of mic is humorous I must say!
But here's where I have my biggest issue with this particular show...
Why is the pre fm ( especially) and fm broadcast not in the correct running
order and where is TKAR, WS/BMS and the complete HMMt ??? I would think they
were originally recorded no? I can understand them not airing TKAR, Page
breaking a string and all, and then rearranging the order to account for that,
but where's the rest?!?!?!?! You would think a tape of that does exist.
Somewhere in a radio station in Stockholm there's an answer to that I suppose.
And to add to it, I need to re-re-listen to this to make certain, but I swear
the version of "I Gotta Move" that I've had for awhile on "The Can" collection
is neither from the aud and certainly dosen't sound like it's from this
soundboard pre or post fm master. So Is there still another source?!?!? A
decent aud of this complete show would really be a find because even as poor as
this aud source is you can tell they really came out firing on this one.
Pumping iron for their assault on the US just a few weeks later.
So in all,if you don't have the board version of this date, disc 1 is a still
nice treat for the history buffs.
