RE: that is rock & roll

Dan,
While my heart agrees with you, my experiences are a little
different - for me, real rock 'n roll is exactly what you talked about
(with a little groupie action thrown in for good measure), but rock 'n
roll is a staged performance, no doubt. It's the bands that happen to
pull off those magical moments even during contrived events that we
remember and revere - hence Robert And The Dove - a magical moment that
made something contrived and hypocritical into something special and
memorable for every one of us.
Rock 'n roll for me is the airplane in Black Country Woman, or
Jimmy saying STOP during The Crunge, or the telephone on JPJ's keys at
Knebworth. It's Jeff Beck throwing amps off the stage, Ozzy biting the
head off a dove at his contract-signing meeting, and every
perfectly-placed hair on Rod Stewart's head. Rock 'n roll is every
perfectly staged show, or every time a singer leans over to a guitarist
during a jam and says "Hey man, do you know Steamroller?" I just wish
it were all that way.

TimD says:
Actually, you'd be really surprised how rock 'n'
roll that
really is. And how much of what we think of as
rock 'n' roll is really
staged for effect, or is an illusion designed to
make you think you saw
something you didn't, or heard something that
wasn't really played.

Dan says:
I see what you're saying, but if it's that staged
and planned out, it's not so rock & roll to me.

What epitomizes rock & roll for me? That picture
of Johnny Cash giving the camera the finger at
San Quentin (or Folsom, I forget). Rock & roll
is that little whoop Elvis gives at the end of
Mystery Train, or Ringo yelling "I got blisters
on me fingers!", or Zeppelin throwing Shaft into
D&C. Rock & roll is the Ramones, about as un
self conscious as you can get, playing catchy
songs with limited skills and looks making music
for themselves that no one was making for them.
not saying other things aren't shades of rock,
but I don't think that picture of Plant and the
pigeon is rock & roll. Good photo journalism
maybe?
