Many e-mail servers scan and remove attachments that contain a virus.
I'm sure this is what is happening. I get some e-mails that have the
attachment and some that don't. So somewhere along the line some
attachments are getting stripped.

I'm no expert, but I know of no virus that can be executed simply by
opening an e-mail. The attachment would have to be opened to execute the
malicious code.
