An audience's reaction to Plant's announcement of Stairway at a June
1972 concert is of no relevance to the issue of Jimmy's and Robert's
contradictory recollections. It's true that Plant has claimed that
audiences were bemused by early renditions of the song whereas Page
seems to remember that they reacted very positively to it, but these
comments all refer to 1971 performances before the song had been
released. At the time of the California 1972 concerts, the fourth album
had been out for more than six months and the audiences would have been
very familiar with Stairway. It would have been amazing if they had not
given it a rapturous reception!
My reaction on first hearing Stairway To Heaven from How The West Was
Won was one of bewildered astonishment for an altogether different
reason. If you want to know why, then the new, revamped, expanded Garden
Tapes web site is the place for you. If, on the other hand, you would
prefer to avoid reading about such details until you've had a go at
spotting them for yourself, then you should definitely NOT go to:
