Just listened to a few tracks. Holy crap, are they good. It's
amazing how many subtleties are lost in the mix on those boots;
before now, I didn't even know that Bonham did little things with his
hi-hat (not talking about what he does in Immigrant Song, though).
Compared to the Burn Like a Candle boot, the band sounds so...
elastic. I'm also glad they combined the two shows for OTHAFA, and
I'd imagine they did the same for DaC and WLL (possibly Moby Dick
too) as well.
Sounds like they used Long Beach exclusively for Immigrant Song, and
it's a bit of a trade-off: Bonham's drumming is superior on 6/25 (two
hi-hat flourishes and an extra fill at one point), but Plant shines
on 6/27... everything's in key. The 6/25 guitar solo is pretty
hammering (no pun intended), but I like the slightly odder 6/27 --
and the rhythm section compliments it well.
I absolutely cannot wait to hear Moby Dick, as Bonzo's drums sound
just amazing. You really can't appreciate his hats at all on most
live Zep tapes, since there's always so much distortion that leaves
them nearly inaudible on some songs. Man, I'd love to hear pristine
mixes of 03/06/71, if they exist. (When was it reported that they
began taping most, if not all, shows from spring '71 and on? I don't
give a shizz if they're not 24-track, either! Fugu me!)
