Re: zeppelin-digest V5 #1625

<<"I can't stand that sniveling moron that calls himself a singer!!!">

I think it's just a matter of musical tastes. IMO his voice works quite well
on a lot of GNR's songs and couldn't imagine any other style working for it.
What about the guy from AC/DC? Could you imagine a different vocal style for
those songs? How would it sound if Eddie Vedder tried to pull off the Immigrant
Song... I'm not trying to defend Axl.. I think he's a weak vocalist that
depends on one single style and range for everything.. however I can remember
playing Zep cd's at work and having more than a few co-workers nearly in tears
laughing at how horrible Robert's voice was. Mocking him with screeches and
screams. Bob's voice does get some taking used to for new comers to the Zep
world
and as we see it as one of the best ever.. so do fans of other vocalists think
of their favorites.

I think Slash is actually a pretty talented guitarist. At least he tries,
unlike most modern rock guitarists. He actually plays solos and doesn't rely on
jamming his arm up and down in a perfect rhythm for three and a half minutes
and calling it guitar playing. It's hard to defend your favorites against
people
who are huge fans of other bands. I had enormous battles with people in
highschool trying to make my case that Jimmy was better than Jimi. You want to
talk
about sloppy playing.. check out some live Jimi stuff... but as we know..
it's about getting emotion and feeling from the instrument.. not neccessarily
hitting perfect scales without missing a note. I can sit and watch my G3 dvd
and
still be amazed at how great they are.. but I don't get the same shivers and
feelings I get from watching a great guitarist like Jimmy, or Jimi, or SRV that
just go into that trance.. put on the musician faces.. and let their emotions
play the music instead of their concentration on correct fingerings.
