They're copyrighted again as of Led Zeppelin "The Complete Studio Recordings.
Publication 82526-2. Copyrighted 1993 by Atlantic Recording Corporation for the
U.S. and
WEA International Inc. for the world outside of the U.S. All rights reserved.
on page 5 of the Four Symbols side of the bound book containing the Four
Symbols CD sleeve
and on the spine. A published work does not have to contain the circled C
symbol in
order to be copyrighted. Anybody who can read the Copyright Law can find that
out easily.
The Four Symbols are recognized as individual art glyphs because of public
performances
and separate individual usage by their respective owners. How they operate
under British
law is anybody's guess. But because legal signatures in the U.S. and Britain
can be
individualized marks as well as handwritten or notarized stamps um I'd think
twice.
The reworking of International Copyright law in 1978 covers everything back to
1970 and the
original publication appeared on November 8, 1971.
JPJ's is still in active use as were Plant's and Page's in derivative form in
the 90's as
separate and distinct symbols of personal mark. What I've done as far as the
four symbols
is to keep them in use strictly as personal fan tribute art as fair use copy
for myself or
in an educational situation where I'm teaching someone informally about Led
Zeppelin.
If you're doing these as a distribution for profit you could be facing
licensing fee issues.
I know that from direct firsthand professional experience in art production for
printed
sportswear for a major player in that field from the past.
Because the Four Symbols are becoming cultural icons their legal status may
eventually
change just as the word aspirin
did. In fact after this I may take an aspirin.
