My guess is it's because they are simply straight transfers to DVD of master
videotape reels originally used for home video releases (although they could
be from digital masters used for earlier laserdisc releases).
In other words, they're not "special editions"--no particular effort has
been made to improve the sound and picture over what was used as the master
for earlier VHS releases. Sound has not been remastered in Dolby 5.1
surround, or DTS, etc.
A good way to tell is to look at the packaging before buying: does it say
"remastered" or "special edition" or "remixed in 5.1" or something similar?
Are there special features besides the main feature (outtakes, audio
commentary from the director/cast, etc.)? If not, chances are it's just a
straight dub, marketed for the sole purpose of bringing in extra cash.
Btw, the fact that a film is in widescreen format and maybe the theatrical
trailer is included, along with some static pages listing the cast and crew
filmographies, DOES NOT constitute special features, in my book...
You can also check out DVD sites on the Web, which generally provide all
these technical details for all releases.
It's all moot anyway--after May 27 nobody's ever going to watch TSRtS again
:-).
