It's confirmed: the director's cut DVD, due out December 4 and entitled
"Almost Famous--Untitled: The Bootleg Cut, Director?s Edition" (couple
of in-jokes in there!), includes the 12-minute deleted scene where
William makes his mom listen to Stairway all the way through. Well, not
quite. About a half-hour of excised material has been added to
constitute the director's cut, while the Stairway scene is standalone
material included on disc 2. Since Crowe and Dreamworks were unable to
clear the rights to the song, the DVD includes a cue for the viewer at
the point where s/he should start playing the song on CD. . . kinda like
synching up the Wizard of Oz and Dark Side of the Moon, I guess. There's
also the requisite slew of other special features.
One reviewer says it's really a shame the Stairway scene wasn't in
either the original theatrical release or the director's cut, as it
gives more insight into the characters and their motivations. It's
pivotal to William's mom deciding to let him travel on the tour with
Stillwater.
Also, the soundtrack is about to be released as a double LP on 180-gram
audiophile vinyl by Classic Records.
