I think in order to justify the cost a record label wants to see a fairly
large number of units sold in order to justify the expense or a reasonable
return on investment. Also as Eddie pointed out each company has a limited
budget to put product out product and my guess is a classic band like Led
Zep would be passed over in favour of a new act.............Out of curiosity
Pieter how did all those live shows Peal Jam released sell at your shop? Did
you carry all of them?

Yes why not ?
I work in a record shop and every special item from
any band who release such stuff (Grateful Dead, Phish, Pearl Jam etc.)
is picked up very quickly. What is there to lose for a record company ?
Some artwork, package material etc. and everybody is happy (well almost
everybody).
