It's a tough situation. If Atlantic decided to
release full-length soundboard or multitrack shows we
would of course buy them. However, would they put out
10 or 20 of these? Probably not... because only the
hardcore fans would buy them all. Even if they did,
after buying them all, fans would still buy bootlegs.
This is because, while it's not ideal, fans will
always put up with bad sound quality to hear new
shows. Atlantic would never bother to release bad
quality shows to claim the few dollars out there for
this type of thing.
If Atlantic decided to do the live compilation thing
and we got 6 CD's of amazing sound quality spanning
their entire live career, we'd all buy it and then
want the complete shows the compilation was culled
from.
An alternative might be to release everything in the
vaults as definitive versions (best quality ever) as a
small run available on a website and overpriced to
make up for the small pressing run. I'd gladly pay
$50 for two CD's (or $60. for three) as I do now when
buying bootlegs. We're used to those kind of prices
(and much worse) and we would be getting absolute top
quality.
Another alternative might be a box set that includes 5
or so complete shows in top quality. That would
probably sell very well actually. Then... volume 2,
etc.!
What are the costs with this? The recordings are
made. So you pay to mix and master them, you pay to
package it and then sit back and watch the cash come
in!
Do it Atlantic! Do you want my money or not?
