Not sure if it counts as a "tribute" album, but "Whole Lotta Zeppelin" that
was put out by the House Of Blues label a year or two back was bloody
brilliant. Some old blues guys and some new blues guys covering Zep songs
(and in one case, a guy covering the Zep cover of his own song) and every
single cut did something good for me. I love the whole friggin thing.
I can't say I care one jot or tittle about Blaze Bayley but I love me some
Lemmy and I'll happily listen to a Motorhead cover. I liked Helloween back
in their day so maybe that'll be good. JP and the BC's have been known to
throw out a mighty fine Zeppelin cover tune. Depending on who the other
bands are, I'd say I might just like this tribute album. In fact, knowing
me like I do, I'd say it would almost be a given that I'll like this tribute
album.
This is where I'm coming from: When I was a much younger <and snottier> Led
Zeppelin fan, I considered it a sin, a sacrilege, for any other band to even
*think* about covering a Zeppelin tune. Who in the hell did any of those
punks think they were, anyway? I was pretty narrow minded about a lot of
things back then but people thinking they were good enough to cover Zep was
way high up on my list of stuff to bitch about. That and cigarettes being
more than 80 cents a pack.
Now I'm older. Ohhhhhhhhhhh, so much older. My knuckle joints are
throbbing just thinking about how much older I am now. Am I wiser? I
dunno. I tend to think I'm not that much wiser but I'm a hell of a lot
lazier. It takes a lot more effort now to work up the aggression needed to
hate a band that would try to do a Zeppelin cover. I just ain't got that
kinda energy or time or inclination to go getting all upset about some
upstart band that wants to cover the greatest band that ever laid a groove
into wax. How can I blame them for wanting to cover Zep? If I was a band,
*I'd* wanna cover Zep. Even if I only did it on a little 4 track recorder
in the drummer's basement for our ears only, I'd wanna cover Zep. Now if
some band's got the nuts to say "I wanna cover Zep" and then put it out
there for everyone to hear, "More power to 'em" is what I say. Maybe it'll
suck. Maybe it won't. But I sure can't blame 'em for wanting to try.
And I don't think Lemmy is capable of sucking. But I love me some Lemmy so
I might be biased.
