An interesting idea but here is another one. For some time I have
applauded
the people running 'trees' on this list. They help share the music
and help
keep commercial bootleggers to a minimum. Selling our beloved Zep's
music
without their permission is simply wrong. Being a fan I want the
music
however and the moral middle ground I have come to in my head is that
trading is ok but selling is not.
Why don't we have an 'account' set up, in the bands name, with a major
charity such as Jimmy's favorite the ABC trust. Every time a tree is
formed
each person that receives a copy of the show sends in $5 to the
charity.
With 500 people not being an uncommon number for a large tree that is
$2,500
per tree. We do probably 4 or 5 trees a year and so we could
contribute
easily $10,000 per year. I would even suggest putting a note on any
custom
made artwork soliciting donations and the charities mailing address.
I think this has several good points. First, $5 per bootleg is not
going to
keep anyone from feeding their families and is much less than the
price of
an official release. Second, it might make the boys in the band a
little
less upset about bootlegs. Third, it might draw the attention of some
hoarders and possibly get more tapes released, hey it's a good cause.
And
finally, its a good cause anyway.
I would like to know what people think. I would be happy to see about
setting up an account if people are going to participate.
