no more Kodak Golds

It appears Kodak will no longer produce Gold Ultima CD-R's. This
explains why they no longer list them on their web site or why prices
have increased. The best price I've found is at eCost.com; 200
branded, 74 minute, Kodak Gold Ultima for $122.17. Postage to me
added $15.45. So it comes to 68 cents/disc. Certainly more than
Kodak's sale a few months ago (about 48 cents/disc). So if you see
them, grab them. Below is a reply from Kodak about this matter.
=============================================
The only difference between Kodak gold and silver general-purpose
media
is the reflector layer. Ultima gold media uses a pure (24-Karat) gold
reflector. Kodak "silver" media actually uses an alloy of silver and
gold reflector. Both the gold and silver reflective layers will last
over 100 years. There is no read / write quality differences between
these CDRs. Some customers simply prefer the color of silver to the
color of gold.

The life expectancy of Kodak CD-R Media is 100+ years or more.
Please
note that a life expectancy for CD-RW media has not been published at
this point.

To increase longevity, Kodak adds real gold to the silver layer in
our
CD-R media, which allows our discs to last up to six times longer
than
silver-only discs. We also offer a 100% gold disc, which lasts up to
12
times longer than silver-only discs.

The silver plus gold or Ultima media is what we will be producing the
most in replacement of the all gold media. But as you can see you
should not notice a difference in quality.
