first impressions

I have Kurt Cobain to thank for getting into Led
zeppelin. I was thirteen and Kurt was GOD. I read an
interview with him, and he said that Led Zeppelin was
one of his favorite bands, which, in my impressionable
age, said "go out and buy led zeppelin-NOW!"
I was very lucky in that my dad (who worked for Time
Warner) got the box set for free within a week. It
wasn't for me, mind you. I sat down and listened to
some of it with him, and was like "definately more
than some lame heavy metal band from Wayne's World."
But I wasn't hooked. It was very good, but it just
didn't click. I still remember the first time I heard
stairway-on my brother's b-day in my parent's room on
their enormous stereo system. It was art. I still
wasn't hooked though. then one night, I borrowed my
dad's box set, and listened to Stairway again, and was
like "wow" and hit the repeat button. I must have
listened to it 5 or 6 times before I was like, this
other song was cool too, let's listen to it again. The
bug bite me. Big time. I went on web search (it was
'98) and eventually found Buckeye's webpage. I was so
in awe I didn't know what to do with myself. It was
(and is) the perfect zep toystore. I remember thinking
"this Buckeye dude must be the coolest guy" and
playing around for hours upon hours upon hours. It
wasn't until a week later that I started wondering
what the band looked like. I had flipped through the
big booklet that came with the box set, but I hadn't
really looked at it.
First impression-Jimmy Page is(was) drop dead
gorgeous! Robert Plant was a blonde version of Pagey
with more chest hair. Bonzo and JPJ were average
looking guys who were very cool.
Good times!
