Sandy Denny had left Fairport Convention in January 1976, and was releasing
a solo album during the 77 tour. I don't think an English folk band would
have got a very good reception from Zep's crowd at that time, but I wish
they'd got Sandy in to to vocals at a show; BoE is my favourite Zep
acoustic number.
Zep first went out on a headlining tour without support at the beginning of
1970, and they only had support on rare occasions from then on (usually the
very big gigs such as Knebworth and the 73 show in San Francisco). As to
why they did that...
1. They were playing shows at least two hours long at this point, and over
three hours for the 77 tour not much room for a support act there.
2. They wanted to present their music alone to the audience
3. Led Wallet strikes again

Having had a look at 'Led Zeppelin: The Concert File', BoE was played at
all the shows where a setlist survives apart from 22/5/77 (Fort Worth) and
the two shows which were abandoned. BoE was probably played at all the
other shows which we don't have tapes for.
JPJ played 12 string, Page played mandolin and Bonzo played tambourine.
