Phasing the cymbal-sound...

'sup y'all,

Does anybody besides me find the Phase Shifter effect the
soundman put on Bonham's cymbals annoying after a while? The
effect is most pronounced on certain soundboard recordings.

Prime example of what I'm talking about: 'Kashmir' from Dallas 3/4/75
About five minutes of that constant "swiiiish-swiiish-swiiiiish" drives
me bananas.

This is one of the reasons a good audience recording can beat a
board recording sometimes.

I'm sure the phase effect sounded great in the big room, but fed out
of the board it sounds like shit on tape. Jonesey's keyboards on the
'80 tour soundboards are the same way. Really cheesy. Vocal-wise
or bass-wise, you can rarely beat a board recording. But for the
instruments other than bass guitar, a live recording needs some
acoustic reinforcement from the room. Of course, audience
recordings from an outdoor show can't be helped much in this way,
since the sound is going straight out over the crowd and not being
reflected around much.
