Hi Badgers...
I know it's been established that this bumper sticker thing is humorous
fiction (along with Bill's P/P press release) but the following is a true
story.......
When I first moved to Chicago in the summer of 1967, our apartment was
searched off and on (at least 5 times, maybe more) by the narcotics police
over a period of about two months. They would usually arrive sometime
between 3am and 5am. Although they never had a search warrant, we let them
in because we were young and scared. They were always the same five
(yes...5!) plain-clothed cops and showed us a badge through the chain lock we
had on the front door. There we were, four 18 yr old girls in nighties lined
up on the living room sofa while they ransacked the place. They emptied
drawers on the floor and everything...I mean just like you see in the movies.
They never found anything because we never really had any drugs...of our
own, that is. We used to hang out with a bunch of local musicians that
always brought over the drugs but the drugs always left when they did.
However, one time when we were cleaning up the big mess the cops made, we
found a joint in the toaster.......we were relieved that they had missed it,
although I don't think it would have been enough quantity, even in 1967, to
put us in jail. Anyway, I'm sure we soon got over the trauma and paranoia
enough to smoke the joint....:)
Well about a year passed and things got pretty quiet when one night it all
happened again. A knock on the door in the middle of the night, this time a
search warrant, and before I knew it my little sister along with my best
friend were being hauled downtown to the city jail. My sister, because the
grass was found in her bedroom (we believe to this day it was planted by the
cops) and my best friend, because her name was on the apartment lease. We
managed to get them out of jail the next day with the help of a young lawyer.
The case was eventually dismissed in court due to a sympathetic judge and a
police officer that lied on the stand.
If anyone else has ever been through a similar experience, you will know what
I mean when I say that it is an awful feeling that never really leaves you.
It is a feeling of being invaded and it is quite scary. I know I'll never
forget it.
