Zep on CNN

Monday, March 20, CNN Showbiz Today ran a short piece on the emphasis of
today's music business on hit singles.

It opens with WLL from TSRTS, with the voice over, "Led Zeppelin might have
gone over like a lead balloon (delivered as if the announcer just made that
up--obviously he hasn't a clue to the source of the band's name) if their
first album came out today instead of 1969. They didn't have a Top Ten hit
until Whole Lotta Love on their second LP, and in today's environment they
might not have gotten a second chance."

Then there is a clip of Robert, from current media whoring, saying, "Yeah, I
know some people that's happened to. Yeah, it's a shame. Because their
songs were still good."

Then comments from Nick Fleetwood, Richie Sambora, Babyface, Eddie Levert,
Sr., Puffy Combs, Van Halen, and a woman from Billboard about fickle tastes
today, and how record companies have no interest in developing artists, only
in those single hits.

Then we have Robert beside a silent Jimmy in sunglasses and short hair (how
I know it's from their current promo interviews). Robert says, "If you
could capture the attention of the listener when there's so much so much
stuff around, the song as a song, good ones come up to the top." The piece
closes with another clip of WLL.

I'm curious to know where Robert and Jimmy were for that interview. They're
dressed for the press, Jimmy all in black, Robert in his black leather
trousers and an open oversize white shirt, though he has neglected to comb
his hair again (or else it's very humid). They are not in a studio or a
typical hotel room. They are sitting on old-fashioned wooden straight
chairs, and in the background are a wooden door with metal strips, a wrought
iron hanging oil lamp over a pot-bellied iron stove with a vase and a small
statue on it, two windows shuttered with solid wooden boards, and one end of
a big wooden wardrobe.

Knowing how CNN operates, watch for this piece to run all week on Headline
News as filler.
