Re: cdr problem

I've gotten this error as well. I read a little bit about the problem,
and I'll try and explain to the best of my knowledge and ability (which could
very well be lacking).

>From what I read, the buffer underrun error occurs when their is an
interuption
in the flow of data from the source drive (another CDrom drive or a hard
drive).
This causes the buffer (a built in storage area on the CD recordable drive)
on some CD recordable drives to empty. When this buffer is empty, the drive
is basically "out of stuff" to write to the disk.

I believe that the interuption occurs when writing from an source drive
controlled by an IDE controller. If your recordable drive and
your source drive use the same controller, they may be using the
same data channel, which can cause interuptions.
IDE controllers, while slower than
SCSI controllers, are common because they
are generally cheaper than SCSI controllers.

One possible, if short term solution, is to record your CD's at a lower
speed than it is capable of. This will "empty" the buffer at a slower rate
and allow your IDE source time to "catch up".

This is my understanding of the problem. If anyone else has any corrections,
additions, or rebuttals, please don't hesitate to post them, as I am
interested
in learning more about this problem as well.
