The Theramin is a "musical" instrument used by Jimmy- most notably on
WLL.  There is also a brief passage in No Quarter- check out the
soundtrack album TSRTS, or any "other" live stuff to hear it. It makes a
high-pitched squeal- sort of. You can control the pitch of the sound by
bringing your hand closer or further away from an antenna that comes out
of the top of the thing. He used to hook it up to an echoplex(ancient
tape-loop echo box) to get even more interesting noise out of it. Always
reminded me of a metal detector on acid.
