Here's how it works. You are shown five cards and told to concentrate on
one of them. You go through two pages with delays, and are shown four
cards--and sure enough, your card is not there. BUT--neither are any of the
other cards you originally saw!
You _think_ it's four of the original cards because if there was, say, an
eight of diamonds, there is now an eight of hearts; if there was a Queen of
spades, there is now a Queen of clubs. As you did not concentrate on the
other four cards, you were only vaguely aware of a red eight and a black
Queen--but if one of those was the one you concentrated on, you now see a
different suit and your card is missing.
The trick depends on your not really paying close attention to the cards you
didn't choose. Jean
