The 7-8 song, 40-45 minute phenomena is more due to limitations of
physical technology than anything else. If you place too many minutes of
songs on one side of vinyl, it will ruin the quality of the song,
regardless if the song itself is a masterpiece or a piece of shit. And
that is where those "PRESERVE ALBUM CONTINUITY" labels on cassette tapes
come from.
In any event, the fact that CDs how hold 70 minutes has increased the
probability and percentage of crap being released by any particular
artist. The longer recording length has also led the buying public to
feel cheated if there are only 7-8 songs on a release nowadays. Now, we
are just buying more crap for more dollars! Gotta love economics and
marketing.
