Okay, now that I'm back from Europe and have obtained a few items, I hope=
to
clear this up once and for all.....
There are THREE versions of the "Shining in the Light" single that I am
aware of. They
all appear to be very difficult to find, even in Europe. I should note
that I went to record
stores in Dublin, London, Florence, Rome and a few others along the way and
found only
one or two copies of each of these (and I only bought one of each):
All three releases have the same cover picture: The amber-tinted picture of
Page/Plant in
black taken in a hall somewhere, with Plant sitting with his hands folded
and Jimmy
standing with his leg bent and resting on a pedastel, with his arm raised
above Plant.
All three CDs are tan colored and have the same fonts. All on Mercury.
SHINING IN THE LIGHT RADIO PROMO (MERCJ 506 BIEM/MCPS LC0286)
1. Shining in the Light (Radio Edit)
2. Shining in the Light
Note that both tracks clock in at 4:01. The "radio edit" is simply the
album track with the
verses and choruses rearranged to make the track more "radio-friendly" (I
assume).=20
Actually, it's a rather sloppily edit, and seems to be a hack job done at
the last minute.=20
Came in slim "maxi-single" type case, with small paper insert with track
info and
"promo" warning. Found this in a little used record shop in Camden Town,
London, for
=A32.50 (about $4.35).
SHINING IN THE LIGHT (566 087-2 BIEM/MCPS LC0268)
1. Shining in the Light
2. Walking into Clarksdale (Live at Shepherds Bush Empire)
3. No Quarter (Live at Shepherds Bush Empire)
Though it is not mentioned on the sleeve, "Shining in the Light" is the
Radio Edit
version. The live tracks are exceptionally well recorded, even for an
official CD. Listen
to the drums through headphones to see what I mean. Both are also great
performances.=20
This also came in a "maxi-single" type slim jewel case. Found this in a
record shop in
Florence for 11000 lira or about $6.
SHINING IN THE LIGHT (566 086-2 BIEM/MCPS LC0268)
1. Shining in the Light
2. How Many More Times Medley (Live at Shepherds Bush Empire)
This comes in a paper sleeve (no insert) and also has the Radio Edit of
"Shining in the
Light". How Many More Times also includes, obviously, a snippet of "In the
Light".=20
Found this in the shop in Florence for 9500 lira or about $5.
Looking at the sleeves and inserts, neither of the two singles are
mentioned as "Part 1" or
"Part 2". They seem to be two seperate, independent releases. However,
both of the Live
singles claim to be "Imported", though from where I do not know. (I assume
the U.K.)
I also got these items on my trip:
Japanese release of WIC from Tower Records in Dublin. I paid a lot for it
(around $30, I
think). The foldout booklet is virtually identical to the US version, but
it also contains a
white paper booklet with the (accurate!) lyrics to all 13 tracks in
Japanese and English.=20
The disc is black and is a Mercury Release. The CD jewel case is almost
the same,
except different record company info and the wraparound little tag with the
Japanese
writing. Includes "Whiskey from the Glass".
The U.K. 3-track "Most High" single from the same Tower Records.
The Window is a bitchin track!
I also noticed that there seem to be two versions of the "Come with Me"
single. One for
the US, and one for the rest of the world. (I cannot verify this, as I
have not looked for
the other one, but that seems to be the case.)
The one I got in the US has two tracks:
EPIC 34K 78954
1. Extended Radio Edit 6:11
2. Radio Edit II 4:49
Comes in a regular jewel case, with a 1-sided cover insert.
The one I got in Florence, Italy (different shop!) has four tracks:
EPIC 666026 2
1. Radio Verison 4:31
2. Morello Mix 5:19
3. Radio Album Version 6:09
4. Live Version 6:10
Comes in a slim jewel case (maxi-single type).
I have have yet to listen to all these mixes to find out the differences
(nor do I intend to).=20
I did notice that the live version (from Saturday Night Live) has the
glitch from where
Puffy's microphone went out fixed. The corresponding two lines have been
spliced in
from the album version (over the live backing), which does sound a bit
jarring.
Hope this helps....
