Melissa Ruggieri, music critic of the Richmond Times-Dispatch,
has weighed in with a glowing review of last night's show at the MCI Center:
"Page, Plant a dazzling duo." I won't type in the whole thing,
but here are some highlights:
"Guitar worshippers might call Eric Clapton God, but it is really
Jimmy Page who deserves the title. . . . Page and Plant . . . are
way past the prime of the average rocker. But Led Zep alums are
far from average.
"Though Page has adopted a slight paunch and lost his wild locks, his
head-spinning fretwork hasn't fizzled a whit, evidenced on the
bending wails of 'Ramble On.' During that song, Plant attacked
his microphone with snakelike sensuality, furrowing his brow with
eyes clenched shut. *This* is how you deliver a rock song, kids.
. . .
"The boys also assembled a sturdy backing band, drummer
Lee in particular. He's no John Bonham, but his relentless
swatting and tricky bass pedal patterns were awe-inspiring.
"Plant, meanwhile, is still rock's proudest peacock,
strutting and gyrating through the chest-rattling encore of 'Rock
and Roll.' But if Page can retain the title of guitar God, then
Plant deserves a crown of his own."
I'm headed to Virginia Beach for tonight's show and looking
forward to it all...
