PEARL JAM'S 'FLY' GOING OVER LIKE A LED BALLOON
By LISA ROBINSON
PEARL Jam's new album "Yield" isn't out until next
Tuesday, but already the grungemeisters' single "Given
to Fly" is causing controversy for sounding mighty
close to a Led Zeppelin song. Check it out for yourself
this Saturday, when the band does its free-for-all radio
broadcast and cybercast on the Web.
In other Web news this week: The Recording Industry
Association of America has put the muzzle on three
sites previously downloading unauthorized music, and
there's a new site for fans to "build your own CDs."
Also: Check out Blues Traveler's site for news about a
special Wetlands show with leader John Popper
tonight.
Pearl Jam: Did Pearl Jam rip off "Given to Fly" from
Led Zeppelin's 1971 song "Going to California"?
According to Rocktropolis' Allstar News, many radio
stations are giving credence to the issue by playing the
two songs back to back. Decide for yourself when PJ
air their "Monkeywrench Radio" broadcast and
cybercast this. It's aired in New York on WXRK-FM
(K-Rock) and on the Rocktropolis web site at 11
p.m. www.rocktropolis.com
RIAA: The Recording Industry Association of
America recently stopped three unidentified web sites
from offering "free" music for download that violated
copyright laws. This site discusses the problem as well
as a discussion of free speech and music some
politicians want to make illegal. A fascinating
behind-the-scenes look at the music biz, and what the
RIAA sees as the future of recorded technology.

Musicmaker: Musicmaker promises to help you create
your own "custom music CDs," but it's an ambitious
promise. You can "build" and order a custom-made
CD from a list of songs, artists, albums and new music
on this site; but this venture has a limited selection,
probably because the record labels haven't turned
over the rights to too many songs. Still, it could be
another one of those waves of the future.

Blues Traveler: Blues Traveler, who'll headline this
summer's H.O.R.D.E. tour, claim they want to return it
to a "nice little hippie fest." Leader John Popper and
others are at Wetlands tonight as High Plains Drifter;
check out the official BT site for animation, graphics,
news, show info, audio and video clip downloads,
lyrics, tape trading info and merchandise.
