Hey,
I have begun a possible thesis idea involving the analyse of
Zep's lyrics. It involves using an "Emotional Dictionary" where words
were played in categories and levels (with a range of 1-7, mean of 4,
and a standard deviation of 1). I used ALL of the Zeppelin lyrics found
and compared them to other sources so the error level should be small.
Here is some early results:
Pleasantness Rating:
- Overall: 4.57 (Standard Deviation of .23)
- Highest: Whole Lotta Love (5.27)
- Lowest: NO Quarter (3.90)
Activity Rating (ie: Pep or Arousal)
- Overall: 4.01 (SD of .21)
- Highest: D'yer Mak'er (4.41) and We're Gonna Groove (4.45)
- Lowest: In the Light (3.54)
Imagery (Mean for most texts is 1.32)
- Overall: 1.95 (My professor said that Zeppelin had the
highest amount of imagery she has seen; and she has done MANY
different texts)
- Highest: You Shook Me (3.43)
- Lowest: Nobody's Fault But Mine (0.84)
Word Length (Normal human speech has a avg. word length of about 5)
- Overall: 3.80 (.52) [higher then the Beatles]
- Highest: Carouselambra (4.23), Friends (4.21),
Tangerine (4.21), and TSRTS (4.18)
- Lowest: D'yer Mak'er (2.91)
So one of the "Active" Zep songs also has the lowest avg. words length.
If anyone if interested in a particular songs rating...email me...
More to come...
