It doesn't have to be done through one of the existing unofficial fan
organs, though. Melissa Etheridge, for example, has an official "fan club"
run by her record company and her management. They support themselves with
merchandising, and provide prime seats for all members. There's a
reasonable fee to join (about the cost of a ticket), but for the serious
fans likely to attend more than one show, it's definitely worth it. If
Atlantic and Trinifold wanted to do such a thing, they could easily arrange
it at moderate startup costs -- costs that could be completely covered by
merchandise sales. The fact remains that they just don't see the need, or
just don't care.

Judging by the official statement (something about a jam session being
logistically impossible) I would guess it has a lot to do with a largely
non-jam-oriented class of inductees this year. Sure, you have
Santana...and if they could reach back into their memory I'm sure Mick
Fleetwood and John McVie would remember how to jam. Joe Walsh probably
could have held it together, too. But then you have the most song-oriented
people possible -- Glenn Frey, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine
McVie, Michelle & John Phillips -- that would be totally lost in a
free-for-all jam session. It's too bad, but I would be that's the reason.
