You may enjoy this qoute from Richard Barnes' "The Who: Maximum R&B"
concerning Page's role in the recording of The Who's single "I Can't
Explain".

Probably about 50% of all pop singles released in the early sixties had
session men playing them and a good many guitar solos were by the same
handful of session guitarists like Jimmy Page. Pete got anoyed at his and
demanded that he put down the lead guitar and that he was the lead
guitarist. Both he and Jimmy Page played versions of the guitar line for
"I Can't Explain" and they were almost identical. Pete thinks that in the
end it was his guitar and not Page's that was used on the final mix...
...the B-side was "Bald-headed Woman", a song written by Talmy. Jimmy
Page did play the guitar on this track; it needed a fuzzbox and Page
wouldn't let Pete use his for it, so he played the guitar solo...***
