I have three versions of this show, American Beauty (Tarantura), 27/4/69
San Francisco (Kaleidoscopic), and Sitting and Thinking (Tarantura). The
first two feature the soundboard recording, while the third contains the
audience tape. Of the two soundboards, I prefer the Kaleidoscopic. While
it is obviously a few generations father from the master than American
Beauty, it does not have as much of a "dry" sound. To me the
Kaleidoscopic sounds like a good radio broadcast (which it is not),
while the Tarantura sounds like a soundboard (which it is). However,
everyone else I've talked to seems to prefer American Beauty.
The audience tape found on Sitting and Thinking provides a different
perspective on the show, and is also more complete. However, it is no
better than many audience recordings from that time, and if sound
quality is an over riding concern one of the soundboard releases would
probably be a better investment.
