Zep tickets went for $4.50 in 1970...
In 1975 the price had gone up to maybe $6.50...
In 1977 I think the price had gone up to $7.50.
In 1980 the tickets were listed at $12.50 for the never-played November Chicago
date. I don't remember what the tickets for Knebworth cost, does anyone have
that info?
The differences in cost would have been figured on the costs of the trucks and
the lights and the extra equipment and men. Zep's equipment in 69'-70' was very
pared down in comparison with the Zep from what 72'-'73 onward? Also you had to
pay union scale for teamsters that the union could specify were required to be
there regardless of whether or not your roadies could do the work. And they got
paid union scale, very expensive little twist on your concert hall contract.
The difference in costs were justified. Jimmy wouldn't charge somebody what he
wouldn't have paid himself, or didn't think that a regular person would shell
out. And Peter Grant wouldn't charge more than the market would bear for an act
of similar stature, it wouldn't have been smart business. In 80' the prime rate
had started to creep up also.
And the costs were really still in line with most everybody else. $10.50 to
$16.50. Zep was not there to rip people off. When you attended a Led Zeppelin
concert, you got Led Zeppelin - all Led Zeppelin- no opening act and typically
from 8pm until the hall's management threatened to turn the house lights on and
kick everybody out. Over the years, the best $23 I ever spent. For four shows!
Sincerely,
Shar
