Are you sure Jimmy was talking about "You Really Got Me"? Because here's
another quote from Jimmy that tells a different story (I don't know where
it came from originally, but it was reprinted in "Proximity"):
"Ray Davies said things like 'He wasn't anywhere near our sessions,
he played tambourine.' I never played tambourine on the damned
records. I played guitar. But I didn't play on 'You Really Got Me'
and that's what pisses him off..."
Then again, here's a quote from a 1985 interview with producer Shel Talmy:
"Jimmy Page _did not_ play the solo on 'You Really Got Me,' he played
rhythm guitar. He played rhythm guitar because at the time Ray
would not play rhythm guitar, he didn't think he was good enough"
Personally, I don't think Jimmy is on "YRGM" at all. I think he made some
minor rhythm guitar contributions to their first album, and when people
found out he'd sessioned for The Kinks, they naturally jumped to the
conclusion that he played on all the classics because the guitar parts are
so reminiscent of Page's loose style.
