Free speech and committees (NZC)

Woodrow:

>I just do not understand why, with all of the talk of free speech on this
>listserv, anyone that does it is persecuted.

Persecuted? Come now. People have strong opinions on this list. It's
possible that some people, myself included, could be a little nicer, but
there's no definition of "free speech" that includes the right to be
sheltered from people who disagree with you.

Theolyn:

>Btw, for those people who volunteered to be on the committee:
>Imho, this is something that is in your realm of things to handle.

Nope. You're probably thinking it falls under the spam policy:

"Spam: chain letters, illegal scams, and other types of junk email are not
allowed."

(and this is awaiting a vote to change the wording -- I think we're waiting
until after the name crisis is resolved to vote on the proposed changes)
but it doesn't. As annoying as the questions are, they're about Led
Zeppelin. Hard to define as "junk email" when there's a hell of a lot of
questions that we seem to allow, yes?

>If you volunteered to do this task, and everyone on our current
>committee did, then please step up to the plate.

Not necessary -- Jean and Jeremy have already spoken out on this issue
(they believe that we should just ignore them), I agree with them, and any
further discussion should take place on the administrative list.

People have to get it out of their heads that the charter protects them
from things that annoy them. It doesn't do that at all, nor is it intended
to.
