Because the committee has no powers or duties related to the list name, and
no power over the selection process. It's all spelled out quite explicitly
in the charter. The committee can't assign itself new jobs, duties, and
powers, nor would we _want_ it to.
Not as a committee member but just as a member of this list, I do have a
suggestion -- let's get this over with. Either vote, or don't. Endless
recriminations and "I told you so"-style posts are, I suppose, making
somebody somewhere feel better about themselves, but they're also a huge
waste of time and highly irrelevant to the decision at hand. "What went
wrong last time" is also pretty irrelevant. If people want to change the
name, then let's change it. If people want to keep the name, let's keep
it. If people want to vote on it, let's vote on it -- we have a volunteer
to run the vote, we have a place to do it (the admin. list at eskimo), and
most of you apparently have the free time. So stop asking Chris to do it,
stop asking the committee to do it, and stop talking about doing it. Do
it. Or don't.
Sorry to be a curmudgeon about this, but I want to get the first charter
revision vote out of the way, and then I want to start farming the FAQL
updating out to interested people. I'm not going to do it while there are
huge unresolved issues about the list waiting to be decided.

P.S. Don, they're coming.
P.P.S. No cryptography, just cryptic.
P.P.P.S. Bruce: yes, go ahead.
P.P.P.P.S. As you can probably tell, I _don't_ have time for this.
