It's not exactly like that.  A lot of at least Led Zeppelin's problem
with bootlegging is that they have NO control of what goes out, and Pagey
wants to make sure that we as fans (and to simply satisfy himself) get
Zeppelin sounding their best.  Also, record companies have a flawed view
of bootlegs.  They think that bootlegs are competition to legitimate
releases, and the sale of bootlegs affects sales of legitimate releases
negatively.  Empirical evidence suggests that most people that buy boots
buy them in conjunction with the regular studio releases, not instead of.
 They are simply  looking for more music by their favorite bands.  
Also, the biggest issue for the artists in general is royalties.  All
artists get recording, writing, and performance royalties (something like
8 cents a song for writing royalties) that are collected from the sale of
each CD, LP, single, tape, etc.  Royalties are also This is really one of
the only ways artists get paid (along with touring), and for small
artists make up the majority of their income.  Since these royalties
aren't collected on bootlegs, artists don't get paid for their work. 
When I bought that boot CD last month, Led Zeppelin received nothing from
me for the hard work it took to produce the music.  The BIGGEST problem
in this area is pirating of regular releases.  Please everyone, stay away
from these like the plague.  It's robbery of the worst kind. Especially
since pirating DOES adversely affect the sales of the regular release.
