I think you're right, it *does* sound like "join", but does that make 
any damn sense?

I still hear "mackerel" (as in "holy mackerel") and nobody can change 
my mind, unless you lean towards "make room", which follows the idea 
of "watch out".

Sounds to these ears like "missed you 'n got back late"
