A big "Eye Thank Ewe" to James for posting his memories of the Zep Oakland
Coliseum show of 7-23-77. I hope, James, that you got a chance to read Mr.
Prox's posting of a few months ago detailing his memories of the legendary
Fillmore East show of 1-31-69; a show that effectively ended the career of
Iron Butterfly. Postings such as James's and Hugh's make me forgive and
forget some of the mindless flamming and personal attacks that pollute this
list.
Be sure to check out the new logo for the Badgeholders list at Buckeye's web
site. Very cool. We are the key...
I give thanks that we have contributors such as Paul who take to time to
share their thoughts on Zep's live shows. His "Thanksgiving Shows" posting,
which listed by year the live shows that he is thankful for was excellent,
and as usual, got little response from the list.
I want to take Bill to task for suggesting that the 1973 tour sucked with
only a couple of exceptions, including the "Three Days After" show of
6-3-73. Take a listen to the Fort Worth show of 5-19-73; just terrific!
Even Coach Brett, "Mr. 1977" suggested that it was the best version of
"Dazed and Confused" that he had heard. Bonzo is elegantly powerful, and
the band showed great enthusiasm, which was sorely lacking during most of
the July shows (Providence being a major exception).
So "BBC Sessions" debuted on the US album charts at number 12. Damn. I was
hoping that it could crack the Top 10. I guess that it is still impressive,
considering the wonderful (cough, cough) marketing job that Atlantic records
has done. What geniuses for postponing the release in the US for a week so
the album could be in direct competition with Metallica's "Reload".
One of more underrated Zep shows is from Tampa on April 9, 1970. The great
recording only includes the later half of the show (from "Bring It On Home"
on) but it perfectly compliments the recording of the previous night's show
from Raleigh, which includes basically the first half. I don't know why Rey
describes the sound quality as simply "distant", because I think that it
soundsjust as good as the Raleigh show, which Rey praises the sound quality.
Great HMMT medley, with a terrific intro and one of the best, most compact
versions of WWL I have ever heard, complete with JPJ playing keyboards that
sound like a derranged amusement park ride during the theremin solo. Great
stuff!
Simply stated, I WANT TO SEE MORE OF THAT LA 1971 VIDEO FOOTAGE THAT WAS
SHOWN DURING "LEGENDS". I had to chuckle when Tyler butchered the
pronounciation of Bron-Yr-Aur. "Bron-E-Or". Ha. Ha. I thought that E-Or
was the donkey from Winnie the Pooh fame...
Still waiting for my Tower WWL enhanced CD....
Peace and thanks,
~Chris Gust
