Some thoughts on the new release (damn, don't that sound good?),
Jimmy's mastering of the BBC release is quite elegant. It has an
"air" to the recording that I haven't heard on my bootlegs. Of course
I'd say that this is digitally enhanced, but it makes me wonder what
production qualities that any future Zeppelin projects would have
sounded like. The drums and vocals are really the "stars" on these
recordings. I'm really happy to hear the tonality of the wood on
Bonham's kit. This is something that today's producers strive for. A
clarity in the drums, and enough "space" in the music to accentuate
it without overpowering the notes. The 'Immigrant Song' cut was just
amazing! The drums were concise enough to allow the song to escape
the narrow comparisons of the studio version. I *really* liked that
one. I have it on boot tape, but it doesn't even sound like the same
song!
All in all, and in my opinion, this is a Zeppelin triumph! Now, if
this set of discs can raise enough interest in the music community,
maybe Jimmy will dig a little deeper into the vaults and treat us to
some more of the precious moments as they were meant to be heard.
Flabbergasted,
J.R.
