Here's an excerpt from Lewis & Pallet's "The Concert File"
For tonight's show, Zeppelin are second on the bill to The Who!
Quite why Zeppelin are supporting The Who at this stage is a mystery.
Zeppelin are already a headlining act in their own right. The Who,
however, have been touring the US circuit for considerably longer
than Zeppelin and at this stage in their career are drawing massive
audiences with their spectacular presentation of Tommy. This show,
incidentally, is the only occasion when these two premier league live
British bands perform on the same bill. Lenny Bruce-style comedian
Uncle Dirty opens the show.
'Whole Lotta Love' is played again tonight in another new
experimental version. However, if press reports are to be believed,
the night belongs to The Who. "The Who Steals The Show" reads a local
headline. Richard Cowan reports 'Zeppelin played another fairly
orthodox show, mostly using material from their first album. Although
guitarist Jimmy Page once again proved himself a fine musician, there
wasn't much more to be said about the act as a whole. He and singer
Robert Plant launched into innumerable transgressions of tonal
question-answer games, more conducive to boredom than musically
induced langour"
After this show, the band head back to New York for a gold record
party the following day at the Plaza Hotel and yet another studio
session
> Zeppelin opened for The Who in May of '69? Are you sure about
> that? I somehow doubt it.
Bless your socks,
Larry
