One of the great things about Zeppelin is their ability to turn you on to
other music. I'm not just speaking of the band's early influences, which
are pretty great, but their contemporaries that they either played with
and/or promoted. Foremost in this category is Roy Harper. I think that,
besides Percy, Harper has been Page's best partner. Page appears on
several Harper albums, including Lifemask, Flashes From the Archives of
Oblivion, In Between Every Line, Lifemask, Whatever Happened to Jugula,
and Stormcock. Of all these, perhaps Page's most outstanding moment with
Harper is on Stormcock, where he contributes awe-inspiring acoustic work
to the epic "The Same Old Rock". (These lyrics make even Percy's best
seem lame.) Here's what Harper said in a later interview about their
collaboration on Stormcock:
Pete Jenner and I turned out a great record. Seems like a thousand years
ago now. Though I very rarely listen to my own
records I would definitely say that my personal highlight on the record is
Jimmy Page's guitar solo on 'The Same Old Rock.'
My opinion has not changed since the day he put it on there. Absolutely
brilliant.
(From "Roy Harper on the Web" site.)
Brilliant indeed. Do yourself a favor, if you haven't already, and pick
up all of these aforementioned albums, especially Stormcock.
On a related note, has anyone seen, or possibly own, a Roy Harper video
entitled: "Roy Harper-Live in Your Livingroom"? I saw it in a Rockaway
catalog back in the late Eighties but couldn't afford the asking price of
$100. It was allegedly signed by Harper. More importantly, the video was
said to include a cameo by Jimmy Page. Can anyone corroborate this fact?
I'd love to get a copy of this.
