Badgeholders...
1.) I've grown to love Rob O'Reilly's caustic wit. Nonetheless, the
only thing "banal" about the Zeppelin song "Night Flight" is Rob's
description of it. The music perfectly conjures up the image of the
journey that is the subject of the song. There is so much power in
this track, I halfway expect it to go mobile and propel itself across
to the first disc of the double album, bumping "Custard Pie" from
the opener. Plant's vocals on this track are at their gritty best: A+.
The rhythm section, pure locomotion: A+. A look at Page in the role
of an accompanist, setting the scene: B+. Rob O'Reilly, talking out
of school: F. Maybe Rob was thinking of the Steely Dan tune "Night
Flight" off "Pretzel Logic"? Or perhaps the Rush tune "Fly by Night"?
I'm sure there is a perfectly good explanation.
2.) The version of "I Can't Quit You" that has surfaced on the BBC
broadcast Eddie Edward's is treeing is the best version of the song
that I have ever heard. More powerful than most live versions, and
more distinct than the Top Gear version from two weeks earlier,
which was fantastic as well. As Eddie said, this track is the true
revelation of the broadcast, and is reason enough to sign up for
the tree in and of itself. You will not hear another version of ICQY
like this. The last verse features Plant's "I'll buy you a fur coat for
Christmas, and a diamond ring" lyrics... it is one of a kind. There
is the added bonus of an upgrade of "Sunshine Woman" as well.
Truly an exciting discovery.
3.) The Rover would have been a great acoustic set piece if the
band had wanted to use it as such.
